From Amazon.com: In a world with no poverty, no crime, no sickness and no unemployment, and where every family is happy, 12-year-old Jonas is chosen to be the community's Receiver of Memories. Under the tutelage of the Elders and an old man known as the Giver, he discovers the disturbing truth about his utopian world and struggles against the weight of its hypocrisy. With echoes of Brave New World, in this 1994 Newbery Medal winner, Lowry examines the idea that people might freely choose to give up their humanity in order to create a more stable society. Gradually Jonas learns just how costly this ordered and pain-free society can be, and boldly decides he cannot pay the price.
A book: My class, Scott Bateman Middle School in The Pas, read this book and we thought it was great! It's very different compared to some of the books I have read. I recommend it if you want a book that is kinda like a fantasy book. However, I thought that it should of continued because it seemed like the book didn't end.
Good read for Adults too: This is a bit of an basic book, but a good discussion for a Book Club. It is a very quick and easy read; full of interesting thoughts about what a `perfect' society would be like. It had the answers to all of our difficult questions. "What role do I play in society?" "How do we handle heath care?" "Who will look after us when we are old and unable to?" "Will I find a life partner?", etc., etc..
Thought Provoking: Highly recommended! This book was a re-read for me but I read it long enough (7-8 years) ago that I didn't quite remember all the details. This is a compelling story of a dystopian society. A quick yet thought-provoking read that should be on everyone's to-be-read list. This is definately a story that makes you think and will stay with me.
The perfect story: At the world of the book the giver only has the colour of black and white. But the only one who knows about colours is the giver. But as soon as Jonas and all the others at his age gets an assiment Jonas gets the assiment of the Reciver. The assiment of the reciver is very rare. The next day as soon as Jonas goes to the place where he was suppose to for the assiment he meets a old man who knows about the colours and suppose to tell Jonas about the colours of the world. He does not tell his name. He just tell Jonas to call him the giver. After the giver tell/show Jonas about colours. As the time passes by he meets Gabriel. Gabriel is a very adoreable little baby with the rare blue eyes. But after he finds out that Gabriel was going to die... .He decide to get out of the community with Gabriel. At the end Jonas and Gabriel thinks that they hear music for the first time. But perhaps that Jonas thinks that its a echo
Excellent: This was the best most awesome book ever! I felt like I was in the book as Jonas when I read it. It was a great powerful story! You gotta read it! NOW!
