Second Edition: This guide is a comprehensive and user-friendly reference filled with practical strategies and tips for solving the everyday problems you face while organizing and managing a classroom. It's designed so that you can pick and choose from among the smorgasbord of ideas to find exactly what you need for your unique classroom situation. This second edition specifically addresses the changes that have occurred in education since the first edition was published: the standards-based, high-stakes testing environment, the role of the Internet in learning, the increase on the time demands of teachers, and the call for greater teacher accountability. It's great for both beginning and experienced teachers.
Best practices for all teachers: Easy to read with many bulleted points, this book is helpful to first-year teachers as well as those who have been teaching for longer. I find that every now and then I need to look at something new to re-energize myself for better planning and more effective teaching. This book does that. It offers best practices in behavior management, time management, lesson planning, effective teaching, and assessment. It also contains helpful lists of professional organizations, professional journals, computer software sources, and instructional materials suppliers. While other authors spend so much time focusing on procedures, this author gives you helpful procedural information but focuses on explaining how you can build relationships with students and make learning an active endeavor. He even encourages you to smile while you're doing it.
Great for all but especially special education teachers: This Classroom Teacher's Survival Guide has such eclectic utility that one could use it for substituting, teaching regular education, teaching teachers to teach and for me I have used it numerous times in special education. No matter if you are new or experienced, there is something that can be utilized in the classroom setting. I have even loaned it to my administration Recommend this to anyone who wishes to have a great resource at their fingertips!!!!! I am a high school teacher in Cerritos, California teaching in the Resource Class with extremely bright special ed students.
Must Read: I don't understand why this book has three negative reviews. Perhaps the formatting could be improved, but this book is an outstanding resource applicable to all teaching situations. I teach biology at a state university and I have found the sections on creating a supportive learning environment, building a learning community, and alternatives to lecturing particularly helpful. Many of the pedagogical suggestions work better for my smaller classes (under 30 students), but I have applied some of Dr. Partin's suggestions into my large lectures (200 students), such as guided imagery and cooperative learning. There is a section called "In Search of Educational Excellence" that gives an overview of educational research. This section should be read and understood by every consumer of educational research. This includes K-12 teachers, administrators, parents who have a child in any school, and all voting citizens. Some research in education is garbage and Dr. Partin explains what rigorous empirical research should look like. My research is in science education and what we know about learning is in concert with Dr. Partin's recommendations: provide a constructivist learning environment and encourage active learning. However, this book is not just a pedagogical guide, it offers suggestions for interacting with students, parents, colleagues, and administration. New and veteran teachers will find specific activities to try and guidelines for writing and implementing lessons. This book is absolutely crammed full of resources.
A great tool for new and experienced teachers: I completely disagree with the negative reviews of this book. It is WAY worth the price! I'm a National Board Certified Teacher who has been teaching for 24 years and I still find good ideas to use from this easy-to-use reference tool. The organization is great and the bulleted lists very helpful. Also, it's an excellent gift for my student teachers, all of whom greatly appreciate it. I showed it to a colleague last week who has just accepted a job with a local college as a student teacher supervisor and he immediately asked if he could buy my book to give to his student teacher and where he could order another copy for himself!
