Lava sand is a soil ammendment with a high exchange capacity. Exchange capacity increases the ability to hold and make available minerals and nutrients that already exist in your soil. Bonsai soil is meant to drain away water quickly. Adding Lava sand helps the soil keep a little more moisture and a lot more of the nutrients that normally leach out with the water.
