Beware! Bogus Collection!: Lee Scratch Perry has a whole bunch of recorded material for sale these days, which is good, and much of it is doing him justice. Unfortunately, you can also find his name on a lot of illigitimate collections put out by pirates with no connection whatsoever with Scratch, this sorry CD being one of them. Weighing in at under 37 minutes, Excaliburman is a far from generous mix of run-of-the-mill 70s material, all of which has appeared elsewhere.(Some of what you find out there under Lee Perry's name doesn't even have him anywhere on the CD. Those are the "one star" collections, hence two stars for Excaliburman.) Those desiring Upsetter material are advised to stick with the Trojan and Heartbeat reissues, or the handful of releases on the Pressure Sounds Label, all of which are classic. There are other decent Scratch CDs out there as well; Mick Sleeper has a thorough, on-the-money collection of reviews of the majority of his material, with helpful discrimination between the real and the bogus. Try and find it - definitely worth the effort. Meanwhile, stay away from this one!
