"Who Wants A Bed Of Roses Anyway?" -- Lal Waterson first revealed the force of her songwriting with 1972's Bright Phoebus, followed by a few all-too-rare offerings over the years, culminating in two last records with her son, Oliver Knight. Her uncompromising songs and performances are high poetry, raising deep and soulful mysteries. Bed of Roses sounds much like Once in a Blue Moon from 1996, which is cause for celebration. Oliver Knight's production and guitar accompaniment are spare and thoughtful. Other musicians and voices are used sparingly and carefully, too. For instance, at one point Jody Stecher adds a breathtaking few measures of congruent, crystalline mandolin. Lal Waterson died of cancer in September, 1998. Even as we mourn this loss, we are so fortunate to have this album! Boy, Lal & Ollie Did Good!!! -- Boy, Lal & Ollie did good! More elegaic than Once in a Blue Moon, just as affecting.
