This is a fantastic rockin' CD!: I was in Waterloo Records in Austin last week when a new CD came on over the store sound system. I assumed it was some new hot major label band, but after running to the cashier to ask what it was I found out it was "Medium Freaky." Last night I saw the Faceless Werewolves play at the Longbranch Inn--it was their CD release show. They are a three-piece with two guitars and a drummer. An INCREDIBLE woman drummer. The whole band was tight, tight, tight, and the women drummer was phenomenal to watch. And not only did she drum lights out, she sang great too--I high register, gruff, punk-but-tuneful female voice with a cool southern accent. Anyway, I highly recommend this CD. They seem to be referred to as "punk," but I'd call it hard driving garage pop. Similarities to, but not derivative of, the White Stripes, but instrumentally share things in common with Cotton Mather and Tommy Keene. Can't wait to see them again and to follow them as the grow up.
One of 2006's best!: My band played with these folks at SXSW in 2006 and I was blown away. I bought everything they had for sale immediately after their set, including a pre-release CDR of this album. As soon as the release version was released, I snapped it up, as well. Definitely one of my favorite releases of 2006.
Muy excellent band and performers: I stumbled upon one of their shows and then bought the record when it came out. Very glad I did both things. Maybe a bit of a Stooges vibe on some of their stuff, but wouldn't say "influenced by" because who knows. They really pour themselves into their playing and performances. Certainly they don't miss not having a bass player. The record has a good thick sound, very tight. Get it if you're a fan of unbridled anti-mainstream rock done with no pretensions. They are wild and creative and deserve to be stars, which they are in my book. Go FW!
