Real Bluegrass But With An Innovative Approach: What I like about this band is that is they are able to mix authentic bluegrass with a little something more experimental and unique. For example, the songs include several covers from bluegrass legends like Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers. But also some originals, mostly written by guitarist Peter Rowan. Actually I think Rowan demonstrates outstanding song writing ability on songs like "Panama Red" and "Midnight Moonlight". So it's a shame that he remained in relative obscurity as a musician. But still his music shines through on this album. I also love the mandolin sound of David Grisman and Vassar Clements' fiddle playing! Among the traditional songs, I especially liked the patriotic "Down Where The River Bends" and the old gospel tune "Drifting Too Far From The Shore". It's ironic because the lyrics of these songs are so different from my personal experience and yet they manage to move me deeply. It's funny how music can do that to you. In any case, this is a fine album and I recommend it highly to both straight-up bluegrass lovers and rock fans drawn to it by Jerry Garcia. Good stuff!
BreakdownL Live Recordings 1973: My casstte of OLD AND IN THE WAY self destructed and I had to replace it. This is what I found after searching. The playlist isn't in the same order and there are a few extra tunes but boy was it good to get this back again. Vassar Clemens and Jerry Garcia never sounded better.
Breakdown: Live Recordings: Great Bluegrass music! A must have for the fan of the genre.
Breakdown CD: The cd was in great shape and was exactly as represented! Quick shipping. Thanks
As if you need to ask: Old and in the Way surprised me when I first heard it. I didn't know Jerry played banjo or did it so well, even missing a finger. I didn't know Vassar Clements hung out with people like Jerry and vice versa. I must say, they pull off the "high lonesome" sound so well. Midnight Moonlight is one of my favorite songs, and all the traditional bluegrass songs on the album are done with authentic feeling and breakneck speed when it's called for. Within 2 minutes into the cd, it feels like porch-pickin' is breaking out. Shipment arrived on time and plays fine. Get this album and/or the other one they did (that I know of). Peace
