Who Are The Reviewers? -- After checking out the reviews posted I assumed (incorrectly) that this CD by Pela "Anytown Graffiti would be something to behold. So I dish out the "Moola" and bought it. I have been buying a lot of different CD's as of late. With some I have scored Big Hits (like Devotchka, for example) and with some is just the same of the same. Pela's is not by a long shot a 5 star CD which leads me to believe that some of these reviewers were extremely partial to this band. This CD is a 3.5 in my opinion but since everyone else seems to have settled on 5 stars I rated it 3 stars. The lyrics are some times better than the music, they sound at times like early U2 with that guitar sound that frankly is sometimes repetitive and not very musical overall. For 5 stars I was expecting a fantastic set of songs each overlapping the other in quality and talent. Instead I found a decent band not more, not less. The lyrics are far better than the music played even though some parts are better than the others is not enough to say this one is a masterpiece or the best album of 2007. That, I believe, is a bold statement. Yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and what for one person might sound like the second coming for another may sound just average. That is why the more reviews the better, for this way you rule out favoritism and or fanaticism for a particular act. The more reviewers get on the mix the safer the expectations of zeroing on the basic value of the act. That said, I surely go with 3.5 stars for Pela "Anytown Graffiti". No more, no less. Solid Album Straight Through -- I liked the first song so much when I first heard it on XMU that I bought the album the next day. Comparable to the Killers in sound, but less predictable, the hards songs are harder, and the soft songs are less sappy. Highly recommended for almost anyone. Everyone I play it for likes it a lot. Pela Pela -- Fantastic disk. Sparkling, wild music. The vocals will slide into your head . Enjoy the ride. If you are in NYC, you can see them in the area since they are Brooklyn lovelies. If you want to have a preview and a listen to Pela live check out KEXP's live performances (kexp.org). Pela's in studio performance is amazing. P E L A -- Of course it had to be almost a year until someone told me about Pela. Oh Well, better late than never, right? My initial response when hearing 'Anytown Graffiti' was that McCarthy's voice sounded like Brandon Flowers and some of the songs reminded me of Stellastarr*. Though McCarthy does have a hint of Flowers in his voice, the music is far and away much better than The Killers. In fact, forget I even compared him to Mr. Flowers. From start to finish, 'Anytown Graffiti' is a solid and focused work. Nothing sounds out of place. Its very cohesive and works as a whole. It's a promising debut that has me expecting great things from Pela in the future. Key Tracks (Though all are good): Waiting On The Stairs Lost To The Lonesome The Trouble With River Cities Your Desert's Not A Desert At All - my fave! Excellent Album (4 1/2 Stars) -- Once again, I'm dazzled by an unknown band. Lately I've been far more impressed by the up-and-comers than by my own old favorites. (Check out Le Loup and The Cave Singers, a couple of my other recent favorites.) I hope that Pela eventually get the attention that they deserve, because their music ought to appeal to a wide audience. It could almost pass itself off as mainstream rock, but it still appeals to my indie tastes. And while I usually favor more experimental instrumentation, the songs on Anytown Grafiti are just so catchy that I love them despite the fact that they're not really doing anything new. I'm surprised how long it took me to hear of this band, considering how great this album is. I hope the name Pela is more widely known soon.
