Unreliable - do not buy: Bought one of these from BrookStone. Thought the concept is great, but the service sucks. Many times, the unit gets stuck on a particular day, and does not move ahead. Eg. today is thursday, and the unit is still displaying last monday's forecast. Not to mention that i have to replace the batteries every 3 weeks. Be sure to save u're receipt if u buy this, coz there is a high chance you might have to return it.
Nice, when the batteries aren't dead: I got my Brookstone weather station for Christmas. Overall, I'm very happy with the data and function of the unit, although sometimes it does seem to be a little out of touch with the local conditions. My only real complaint is the battery use. When I first got it, I was replacing the batteries about once per month, now about two weeks after replacing the batteries, the battery indicator is turning on and off. I don't understand how a solid state device can accelerate its power consumption, but this unit seems to be doing it. At this point, it's costing about $4 per month in batteries and I'm just not sure it's worth it.
Neat but pricey little weather forecaster: So far, this neat little weather forecaster has been very accurate in displaying current temperatures and the five-day forecast even though I live in a wooded area. And, although the device is small (4"x4"), its screen icons and temperatures are easy to read. For convenience, it can be placed on the refrigerator, hung on the wall, or just set on a flat surface (desk, countertop, etc.) using its fold-away stand. The wireless weather signal eliminates the need for a remote receiver or an outside/window-mounted wire antenna. The only issue I have with this device is the price. Too high. Otherwise, it gets four stars from me.
Check it out before you purchase!: We saw this in the Brookstone catalog (at twice the price) so when I saw it on Amazon I purchased it. It did not work. It is supposed to communicate with a satellite and provide a 5 day forecast. We contacted the manufacturer listed in the instruction booklet and they asked our zip code. Hearing where we live they advised us it would not work in our area. Gee thanks. The seller was nice enough to take it back, but I will be out about $15 for the postage to return it plus the non-refundable postage to ship it to me. All products like this should come with a warning and the ability to obtain this info upfront!!
Avoid this one like the plague!: The device itself is very nice and works well while it is in a coverage area, and while the provider of the signal maintains the equipment properly. But... The first time it stopped updating, I contacted Brookstone's customer "support" and got the brush off. They sent me to Accuweather who creates the data. Accuweather was very nice, but they explained that they do not transmit the data, that is managed by Ambient Devices. Ambient chased up the actual people who do the transmission and they eventually fixed their transmitters and I was back on the air. For a while. Repeatedly, the signal strength would drop right off, I'd email Ambient, they would arrange to get the signal restored, and so on. Pretty frustrating. It got worse. The signal died a few weeks ago, so I emailed Ambient as usual and today I received an apologetic email from Ambient saying that the local wireless provider has:- "...made changes to the coverage footprint in that part of Massachusetts and your address is no longer in a covered area. It's taken me a long time to get back to you because I was trying to convince the providers to reverse the changes....but to no avail. If there is no other location, such as an office, where it's convenient to use the device, you may want to contact Brookstone customer support at 1-800-846-3000 to discuss a return." OK, so I call Brookstone, kind of expecting the worst based on my prior experiences, and I got it. They said call Ambient. Then they said call Amazon. They then said they would do nothing. So it is in Amazon's hands now. Poor Amazon, they deserve better suppliers than Brookstone. The net is there is no guarantee that just because you're in the coverage area today, that you will be tomorrow, and this device is totally useless without being in coverage. Oh, and by the way, the "coverage map" says I am covered, so don't even bother looking it up.
