Book Description: The Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1804 to 1806 was headed by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and was the first American overland expedition to the Pacific coast and back. In 1804, a few weeks after the Louisiana Purchase, President Thomas Jefferson had the Congress appropriate $2,500 for an expedition to the west coast to explore this new purchase. The expedition was intended to study the tribes, botany, geology, terrain and wildlife in the region, as well as evaluate the potential interference of British and French Canadian hunters and trappers who were already in the area. These journals are the actual entries by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark from their travels from St. Louis, Missouri to the Pacific Northwest and back.
