Great bar band: I acquired this CD from a friend who's a friend of the band. On my first listen, I was pleasantly surprised to hear some great musicianship from this Alaskan alt-country/jam band. They've been together for a few years and have had their share of local bar and club dates under their belts. The vibe of this record is that of a very laid back bar band. If you like Neil Young, Phish, Grateful Dead, you'll like the Whipsaws. The songs are good, as are the vocals, although it may lag in spots. But you have to consider that this record was recorded a while ago, and they've added more songs and experience to their set list since then.
Glorious Debut: The debut album from Alaska's The Whipsaws. Incredible songwriting accompanied by music and melodies that accent the singular mood of each song. Wayward John is poignant, probably because we all know someone like him. Contraband rocks and Petersville and Shotgun Wedding will attach themselves to your cerebellum like sonic leaches. In my opinion, the only song that brings down the album is Hole In My Heart, but it is playful and probably raucous live. If you like Neil Young, Two Cow Garage, The Wrinkle Neck Mules, or Drive By Truckers, I think there is a good chance you'll find something to add to your collection. Going live in the Lower 48 in 2008. Can't wait.
An amazing album: This is an outstanding album, particularly for a first album by the artist. Evan Phillips shows his worth as an outstanding songwriter and vocalist. Petersville, the story of a true murder in a town with the population of 20, will give you chills, while Hole in my Heart will make you laugh. Great versatility, this hilbilly rock band will give you plenty of entertainment.
60 Watt Ave is even better!: I like this record a lot, but the band has new line-up and really rocks on their latest CD "60 Watt Avenue".
